On Friday, Nov. 13, interim New Rochelle Schools Superintendent Alex Marrero issued an alert to parents cautioning that there were newly confirmed positive COVID-19 cases from students at Daniel Webster Magnet School and Columbus Elementary School.

A staff member at Trinity Elementary School also tested positive for the virus, Marrero reported.

The Webster student was from “Cohort B” and was last in class on Friday, Nov. 6. Five students and four staff members who were in contact with the student have been notified, directed to quarantine, and will be transitioning to remote learning.

Webster returned to in-person learning on Monday, Nov. 16.

At Columbus Elementary School, the student was in “Cohort A,” and was last in class on Tuesday, Nov. 3 and there were no contacts within the district and no others were instructed to quarantine.

At Trinity, three other staff members were potentially exposed by the staffer and have been told to quarantine. No students came into contact with the individual within 48 hours of the confirmed case.

On Sunday, Nov. 15, Marrero issued a new alert to the community to advise that a teacher at George M. Davis Jr. Elementary School has also tested positive for COVID-19.

Marrero said the teacher was last in school on Thursday, Nov. 12, and that three adults and seven students had direct contact with the staff member while he was potentially infectious.

According to New York State's COVID-19 schools "Report Card," there have now been 42 students in the New Rochelle School District who tested positive for the virus, with three teachers and staff members having confirmed cases.

Anyone who was potentially exposed to any of the COVID-19 cases has been notified by district or health officials and advised to temporarily quarantine, while custodial crews have been called in to disinfect and sanitize the buildings.

“Please be aware: It is still vitally important for staff members and parents of students to report all positive cases to the district,” Marrero said. “Only in this way can we be sure that we are responding appropriately to this ever-changing health crisis.”
